Did you know that Boetje’s Mustard started right here in Rock Island, Illinois, where we are still owned and operated today? The original Mr. Boetje based his mustard on an Old World Dutch recipe and started selling it in 1889. He would take the mustard door to door and fill up the customer’s jars for a nickel. It’s hard to imagine a jar of anything going for .5 cents today!
Mr. Boetje retired and sold his interests in the company in 1960, and it’s changed hands a time or two since then. Boetje Foods Inc. has been owned and operated by the current owners since 1983. They’ve made a few changes to the manufacturing process in terms of updated equipment, but the recipe is still the very same mustard that once was sold door to door. Nowadays you can find it in your local grocery store or Walmart in many areas of the country. Several specialty stores throughout the U.S. carry our brand as well. And of course, you can always order it from our website here.
Times have changed, owners have changed, equipment has changed, labels have changed– (did you notice our new label has the website on it now?)– but your favorite stone-ground spicy mustard is the same as it has been since that first day in 1889. Enjoy!
